Krista Niles, LCSW Oakland Therapist

Krista Niles, LCSW
Oakland Therapist

It’s nice to meet you! My name is Krista — I’m excited to connect with you to see if therapy with me feels like the right fit.

Finding the right therapist can be a journey, and I invite you to request a phone consultation with me and a few other therapists to see who you click with most.

I offer virtual therapy to clients throughout California, Washington, and New York. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Stanford University in 2005 and my Master's in Social Work at the University of Chicago in 2009, both of which schools emphasized the importance of using evidence-based practices like Gottman Method, cognitive behavioral, and trauma-informed therapies.

Counseling has been my life-long passion, and I've spent 19 years now as a counselor, therapist, and crisis responder. But in recent years I’ve narrowed my focus down to three main areas of interest:

  • Helping my clients strengthen their relationships with the people who matter the most to them;

  • Empowering clients to care for themselves with gentleness and relaxation — even as they pursue their life and career goals;

  • Helping clients break out of bad habits that are keeping them stuck by learning new skills and breaking through resistance to change.

I'm trained as a family systems and a Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) therapist, meaning that I work with you to understand the roles you played in your family growing up that are no longer serving you in your adult relationships, while also giving you the tools and skills you need to get un-stuck as soon as possible.

Together we can work toward the goals of understanding, kindness to yourself, and making lasting change by looking at the patterns that developed in your childhood and adolescence and their continued role in your life today.

As a therapist who treats clients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, relationship issues, and other conditions that are heavily researched and whose treatment recommendations change year by year, I make sure to attend continuing education classes and brush up on the latest findings from leading psychologists in the field.

I rely on the groundbreaking work of many wonderful therapists who came before me, and I highly recommend the following inspirational books:

  • The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, by John Gottman

  • The Gifts of Imperfection, by Brene Brown

  • Hold Me Tight, by Sue Johnson
